Greetings brothers and sisters in Christ,
Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth; for the LORD has spoken: “Sons have I reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me. The ox knows its owner, and the ass its master’s crib; but Israel does not know, my people does not understand.”
Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, sons who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the LORD, they have despised the Holy One of Israel, they are utterly estranged.
Why will you still be smitten, that you continue to rebel? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
Great words of warning from Isaiah to a nation, a people, who had strayed from God, who had become faithless and had lost their rightness with Him; also, great words to any nation, our nation, as we stray from God and lose our rightness with Him. With these issues, we, as Christian Americans enmeshed in an election year, ought to be greatly concerned.
We hear comments and complaints about our country, these United States of America, from its citizens, aliens, and foreigners. Most of the criticism is in the form of condemnation because of its failures and misguided actions; and if these criticisms are true, we must ask the question—Why?
I venture to offer a response: it is because we have not learned, or refuse to learn, from the history of God’s people as recorded in the Bible—a godless nation condemns itself. God blesses and protects His faithful people; however, He also allows calamities to befall the unfaithful. Therefore, we can only blame ourselves for our problems—by removing God from our nation we have become godless, cold, heartless and barbaric. Just look at what happens each day—watch, listen to or read the news—see the violence, the hatred, the greed, and the injustice, observe the total disregard for human life and of God’s commandments. Does it look or sound familiar? Have you heard the stories before?
Well, if you have spent any time with Scripture, you know that there is nothing new; the news continues to repeat itself, a different year, a different setting, but the same human actions. We would think that the people of God would eventually learn their lesson; but we do not, we continue to turn our backs on Him, suffer the consequences of sin, and wonder why. The answer is simple—we have rejected God and He has left us to deal with chaos in which we have put ourselves. Therefore, we must repent, turn back to God, and return Him to His rightful place in our American society.
We begin with prayer because prayer makes a difference. God in His unlimited compassion responds to prayer offered in His name. As Christians, we must urgently and faithfully pray for our nation and its people. Prayer can affect the course of history and shape the destiny of America. In these United States, the citizens select their leaders; therefore, as we approach the ballot box this year let us choose godly candidates. We have a great responsibility and we must exercise it wisely and prayerfully. Pray for the candidates, that they would be moved by God to seek what is honorable, just and moral. In addition, pray that our Lord would guide each and every one of us to vote for the candidate of His choice.
God said, “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
